Dr. Allen Dyer, Professor and Vice-Chair for Education in the George Washington University Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association as recipient of its 2017 Bruno Lima Award in Disaster Psychiatry. The APA Bruno Lima award is given each year to honor the contributions of an APA member who has made exemplary contributions to the care and understanding of the victims of disaster. Over a long career in disaster psychiatry, Dr. Dyer developed education programs for disaster-affected communities following earthquakes in China and Haiti and a tsunami in Japan. Since 2001 he has worked with Iraqi health professionals and the Minister of Health to develop education programs and policies that would strengthen Iraqi health services infrastructure, for which he was awarded special recognition in 2014 by the Iraqi Medical Sciences Association for his humanitarian efforts. Most recently, Dr. Dyer organized two humanitarian relief teams that responded to different phases of the refugee crisis in Greece, both including GW psychiatry residents as team members.
